Kirk Gibson Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease Awards Grant to Yoga Moves MS

Free Adaptive Yoga Classes Offered

The Kirk Gibson Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease has funded Yoga Moves MS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing adaptive yoga classes to those with MS and other neuromuscular disorders, to launch a program for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. The program, Yoga Moves Parkinson’s, aims to help participants cope with the symptoms of Parkinson’s through yoga and mindfulness principles. Yoga Moves MS weekly classes are open to individuals of all abilities on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.

Participants in the Yoga Moves Parkinson’s program learn from specially trained instructors who understand the needs and challenges individuals with Parkinson’s face. The classes focus on improving breathing, balance, strength, flexibility, mood and overall well-being. By incorporating mindfulness principles, participants also learn calming techniques to calm their nervous system and reduce stress.

Yoga Move MS Logo“The small-group setting provides a safe and supportive environment for participants to practice yoga at their own pace. Research has shown that individuals with Parkinson’s who participate in small-group yoga classes experience less stress and stiffness; improved posture, strength, balance and sleep; as well as increased social support and a greater sense of well-being,” Mindy Eisenberg, teacher at Yoga Moves MS, says.

Classes are free. Yoga mats will be supplied for participants, and individuals who use mobility aids are encouraged to bring them to class.

Congregation Shaarey Zedek is located at 27375 Bell Rd., Southfield. To reserve a spot or for more information, call Mindy Eisenberg at 248-417-5985 or visit YogaMovesMS.org.
